Planning your routine

What time does the US stock market open in the UK?

Use the New York reference time to plan your UK afternoon, including the weeks when the clocks change on different dates.

Quick answer

The NYSE and Nasdaq regular stock-market session opens at 9:30 a.m. New York time. That is usually 2:30 p.m. in the UK. In 2026, it is 1:30 p.m. UK time on trading days from 9–27 March and 26–30 October. The normal close is 9 p.m. UK time, or 8 p.m. during those clock-change gaps. Exchange holidays and early closes are exceptions.

The October 2026 change: one week earlier in the UK

The UK returns to GMT on Sunday 25 October. New York stays on daylight saving time until Sunday 1 November. During the intervening trading week, London is four hours ahead of New York instead of five. The US opening time itself stays at 9:30 a.m.

Sources and date conversions checked on 15 October 2026. The timetable below covers 2026; check the current exchange calendar and any announcements before using it for a trading day.

Which opening time does this guide mean?

This guide covers the regular US stock session: 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Eastern Time on normal trading days. Both the NYSE core session and the Nasdaq Stock Market use that reference window. Other instruments, venues and broker services can have different schedules.

Use “New York time” or the America/New_York time zone when converting. “ET” follows the local clock through winter and summer; treating “EST” as a year-round fixed offset can give you the wrong answer.

Why is the open sometimes at 1:30 p.m.?

In 2026 the US starts daylight saving time on 8 March, while the UK changes on 29 March. The trading days between those Sundays therefore have the earlier UK opening time. In autumn the UK changes first, on 25 October, and the US follows on 1 November.

During most of the year, both locations are either on their respective winter clocks or their respective summer clocks, leaving a five-hour difference. During the March and October gaps above, the difference is four hours. A repeating reminder fixed at 2:30 p.m. UK time will miss that distinction.

Holidays and shorter sessions still matter

Check the exchange calendar before converting a date. The NYSE and Nasdaq 2026 calendars include these remaining year-end exceptions.

Selected remaining 2026 US equity-market exceptions. Check the exchange calendar for the complete schedule and any changes.

UK bank holidays and US exchange holidays follow different calendars. Check the US equity-market schedule for the date, then convert the session. Also check current announcements for unexpected closures or stock-specific halts.

Pre-market, after-hours and broker access are separate

A broker may display prices or permit orders outside the regular session. Nasdaq publishes pre-market and after-hours windows and notes that broker access can differ. Seeing activity before 9:30 a.m. New York time does not mean the regular opening time has changed.

For access outside the regular session, check your broker’s current hours for the specific instrument and order type.

A practical way to plan your UK week

  • First choose the actual date. Check whether the US stock exchange has a full session, a short session or a holiday.
  • Convert 9:30 a.m. in America/New_York to Europe/London. For the October gap, compare Friday 23 October at 2:30 p.m. with Monday 26 October at 1:30 p.m.; Monday 2 November is back at 2:30 p.m.
  • If you use a calendar, anchor a market-open reminder to New York time and check its UK display around both clock changes. Keep your own preparation time separate from the exchange opening time.
  • Plan when you will review your decisions as well as when you will be available. A journal can help you record what you planned, what happened and what you need to revisit.
